About Us

Children at Anweshana Montessori House of Children

Anweshana Montessori House of Children was founded in 1993 with the goal of creating an inclusive learning environment that nurtures the potential of every child and opens them up to a life lived in all its dimensions.

Anweshana is a community that supports the developing individuality, morality, intellect, independence and self-esteem of children from early childhood (18 months) to adolescence (15 years) through work for the head, heart and hands.

The Indian Montessori Training Centre (IMTC) has recognized our Pre-primary and Primary Montessori sections. The Government of Karnataka has recognized the Primary Section (Classes I to VIII).

Our Philosophy

We believe in a holistic approach to education that not only prepares the child for academic pursuits but also for life in all its dimensions. Our aim is to provide children with an education that fulfills their developmental and individualistic needs and thus unravels their true human potential.

We have tried to adapt the educational program to the time and place in which we live so that it remains relevant to their life and isn't just a mere accumulation of facts. We want to help the children discover the intricate connections between everything they explore and experience the fascination and satisfaction that comes with it.

We believe that learning is a very personal and self-driven process that is naturally joyful, meaningful and fulfilling and do not wish to take away from this process by reinforcing external reward and punishment. The intrinsic reward of accomplishing a developmentally appropriate task—satisfaction, joy, confidence—is the greatest motivator.

About Dr. Maria Montessori

Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was an Italian doctor, psychologist, anthropologist, philosopher and educator who is best known for her scientific observations of human development (from birth to adolescence) and the educational philosophy and methodology that was built upon these observations—'The Montessori Method of Education.'

In 1896, after becoming the first Italian woman to become a medical doctor, Dr. Maria Montessori joined the University's psychiatric clinic and began working with children who had intellectual disabilities. Aided by the learning tools and techniques that she developed, the children learnt many things that were initially considered impossible and even passed their public school examination together with normal children.

Dr. Maria Montessori started the first 'Casa dei Bambini' (House of Children) in 1907 for children between the ages of three and seven and later worked with older children and adolescents as well. Through unbiased scientific observation, she deduced the needs of children of different age groups and constantly experimented and created materials and activities that fulfilled these needs.

The universality of Dr. Maria Montessori's method has been proven valid and effective for over 100 years. Though Dr. Maria Montessori conceived the method at a time when research in child psychology and neurobiology was still in a rudimentary stage, most of her educational theories are now supported by evidence from modern research in developmental psychology and neurobiology.

The Montessori Philosophy

The Prepared Environment

A place of simplicity, beauty & order. It is uncluttered and conducive to work, activity & concentration. The environment is designed to be explored and supports the child's natural development.

The Prepared Adult

Acts as a link to the environment for the child. Montessori teachers observe the child to discover their needs and interests, then present activities or materials that match their developmental needs. Children then learn independently.

The Absorbent Mind

Children's minds work differently from adults—they have a capacity for absorbing the surrounding environment by merely being in it. The child soaks in like a sponge whatever is there—the good or bad, beautiful or ugly, peaceful or violent.

Sensitive Periods

Children go through sensitive periods for the development of different abilities—for walking, talking, interest in minute objects, attention to precision, counting objects. These periods facilitate reaching developmental goals.

Educational Tenets

  • The brain & the hands compose a two-fold creative activity—we should never give to the brain more than we give to the hand
  • Since children form themselves in relation to their environment, education begins at birth
  • Education as an aid to the natural unfolding of the child's intelligence
  • Freedom that is born out of responsibility, self-discipline, self-control and the ability to make informed choices
